Project Description

The City of Arlington will be installing a traffic signal at the intersection of 40th Ave and SR 531 with a solid median between 43rd Ave and Smokey Point Blvd. Specific project components include traffic signal with protected left-turn movements, ADA compliant pedestrian crosswalks, enhanced intersection lighting, replacement of left turn lane with solid median for corridor safety, and bus stop pull outs.

  • August 31, 2021 - Bid Opening
  • September 21, 2021 - Bid Awarded to Interwest Construction
  • March 23, 2022 - Estimated construction start date is April 4, 2022. 
  • April 1, 2022 - Construction will begin on Monday, April 4th. During the first week of construction the City’s contractor, Interwest Construction, will work Monday thru Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.  Work will consist of mobilization, surveying the project area, and saw cutting at the intersection corners. The saw cutting will be completed during non-peak travel hours along the east bound lanes early morning and the west bound lanes mid-morning to early afternoon. This work will require lane shifts. Please expect delays if traveling along SR 531 during construction hours.
  • April 8, 2022 - Next week, work will continue between the hours of 7:00AM to 7:00PM, Monday through Friday.  Work will include the moving of a communication pole, installation of the temporary pedestrian access, installation of the new storm system, and removal of the curbs and sidewalks. The curb and sidewalk removal will be completed during the hours of 7:00AM to Noon along the eastbound lanes, and in the early afternoon for the west bound lanes. This work will require lane shifts. Please expect delays during construction hours.
  • April 15, 2022 - Next week work is scheduled Monday – Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Work will consist of removing curb and sidewalk on the south side of 172nd St, road excavation for the bus pullouts, and begin electrical installation of the new signal system.  The roadwork will require lane shifts during the morning hours, please expect delays.
  • April 18, 2022 - Right and left hand turns heading northbound out of the Gateway complex at 40th Ave will be closed until the demolition of the curbs on the south side of 172nd St is complete during the construction hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  Traffic is currently flagger controlled, please expect delays when in this area.
  • April 22, 2022 - Next week ICI will continue work on the south side of the intersection with the installation of the new storm system, addition of subgrade material, begin to build the retaining wall on the southeast corner, and continue the electrical installation for the new signal system. Left turns heading north from 40th Ave onto 172nd St will be prohibited while this work is being completed. Please expect delays in travel times and remember to drive slow through construction zones.
  • April 29, 2022 - Next week work will continue with the electrical conduit installation for the new signal system. Impact to traffic is estimated to be minimal.
  • May 6, 2022 - Next week work will continue on the installation of the electrical conduit, fine grading for the curb and sidewalk on the SE corner, and begin formwork for curb and sidewalk on the NW, NE and SW corners. Left turns heading north from 40th Ave onto 172nd St will be prohibited while this work is being completed. Please expect delays in travel times and continue to drive slowly through construction zones for everyone’s safety.
  • May 13, 2022 - Next week work will continue with the electrical conduit installation.  All traffic movement will be open at the intersection of 40th and 172nd St. Please continue to expect delays in travel times.
  • May 20, 2022 - Next week work is scheduled for Monday through Thursday during the night hours of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. Work will include the relocation of an existing fire hydrant, initial paving, and median removal. Please expect delays in travel times along with short lane closures when the work area is changing.
  • May 27, 2022 - Next week work is scheduled for Tuesday through Friday during the hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, no work will occur on Monday in honor of Memorial Day. Work will include the paving of the bus turnouts and sidewalks on all 4-corners of the intersection. 
  • June 3, 2022 - Next week work is scheduled for Monday through Friday during the hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Work scheduled will include the paving of the bus turnouts and concrete pouring for sidewalks on all four corners of the intersection, continue paving sidewalks and gutters, and electrical. Please expect delays in travel times and drive slowly through construction zones. 
  • June 16, 2022 - Next week work will continue Tuesday-Thursday during the night hours of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM and Tuesday to Friday during the hours of 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Night work will include continued median and roadway excavation and daytime work will include the new median construction. Traffic will move to outside lanes in the construction area while the median is constructed, please  see Phase 2 Map above.
  • June 24, 2022 - Next week the contractor will not be on site. They will return the week of July 5th during the night hours of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.  
  • June 30, 2022 - Next week the contractor will not be on site. They will return the week of July 11th during the night hours of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM and the day hours of 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. 
  • July 15, 2022 - Next week work will continue with the irrigation installation and construction of the center stamped concrete median. Work is scheduled to occur Monday – Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
  • July 22, 2022 - Next week work will continue with roadway paving, Irrigation installation and landscaping. Work is scheduled to occur Monday – Thursday during the night hours of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
  • July 29, 2022 - Next week work will include concrete work in the center median and sidewalk, electrical work, and landscaping. 
  • August 12, 2022 - Next week work will include installation of signal loops, and center median concrete work. 
  • August 19, 2022 - Next week work will include continued center median concrete work, median landscaping and irrigation, and installation of vehicle detection loops. 
  • August 26, 2022 - Next week no work is scheduled at this time. This is subject to change depending on landscape material. 
  • September 2, 2022 - Next week work will include center median landscaping, irrigation, and possible electrical work for signal system. All electrical work is dependent on material arrival.  Construction is scheduled to occur Tuesday – Friday between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. 
  • September 9, 2022 - Next week work will continue with the center median landscaping and electrical work for the signal system. Construction is scheduled to occur Monday – Friday between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. 
  • September 16, 2022 - Next week no work will occur due to material delays. Construction will resume the week of the 26th
  • September 23, 2022 - Next week work will include paving, median demolition, and the installation of the signal arms. The remaining left hand turn pockets west of 40th Ave will be eliminated. Please see detour route to access the businesses on the north side of 172nd St. until the signal is active. Paving and roadway work is scheduled during the night hours of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. All other work will occur during the daytime hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. 
  • September 30, 2022 - Next week work will include center median curb installation, concrete work, installation of signal loops and landscaping. Roadway work is scheduled during the night hours of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. All other work will occur during the daytime hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
  • October 7, 2022 - Next week work will include landscaping and stamped concrete work in the center median. All left turn pockets have been closed along 172nd St from 40th Ave to Smokey Point Blvd. Please see alternative route to access the businesses on the north side of 172nd St. until the signal is active. U-turns are allowed at the 172nd St / Smokey Point Blvd intersection. Construction will occur from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. 
  • October 11, 2022 - The contractors schedule has changed for this week’s work. They will work night shift between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM on Thursday to install the signal loops and remove existing channelization. Friday work occur during the day between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM to pour the stamped median curb. 
  • October 14, 2022 - Next week work will include installation of precast curb, remaining traffic loops, and permanent striping, and continued landscaping. The signal is scheduled to be turned on Thursday evening beginning at 8:00 PM. Construction will occur during the night hours of 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM for all in roadway work and during the day hours of 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM for all other work.
  • October 21, 2022 - Next week work will include finishing the installation of the pre-cast curb and any remaining striping. Construction will occur during the night hours of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
  • October 28, 2022 - Next week work will include finishing the installation of the pre-cast curb and any punch list items. Construction will occur during the hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, curb work is weather dependent and will occur during the night hours of 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. 
  • November 10, 2022 - Last week the project continued with the pre-cast curb installation. This marks the completion of the final work in the roadway. Over the next few weeks all punch list items are scheduled to be completed. Construction will occur during the hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
