1. Do I need a permit?

If you are not sure whether or not your project requires a permit, feel free to contact the permit center at 360-403-3551. Business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

2. When are building permits required?

The following are the typical permits that a homeowner may need to obtain for various projects:

• Adding plumbing fixtures
• Construction or repair of decks over 30 inches above grade
• Construction that involves additions to your home or business
• Structural changes (removing a wall, adding windows or doors)

For property development other types of permits may also be required. Please contact the City’s planning division at 360-403-3551 for additional information.

3. When are other permits required?

Other projects that may require a permit include:

• A sign permit must be obtained to install a new, altered or relocated signs.
• Any activity that occurs in the right-of-way (typically the area between the back of the sidewalk on your side of street to the back of sidewalk on the opposite side of the street) requires a right-of-way permit.
• Any grading activity (excavation or placement of soils) requires a permit. Grading activities involving 100 cubic yards or more requires SEPA review.
